The ongoing Indian Premier League 2023 is turning into a forgetful affair for Delhi's trusted opener Prithvi Shaw. Despite the management backing him with repeated opportunities, the young batter has continued to disappoint fans with his dismal outing in the tournament. Shaw has featured in all six matches played by the Delhi-based franchise so far but has managed to amass only 47 runs, including two ducks.
Things didn't change in Delhi's low-scoring affair against Kolkata Knight Riders either as the 23-year-old- once again failed to put up a show at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. Chasing a mere 128-run target, Delhi once again lost Prithvi Shaw cheaply as the Mumbai-born batter could only last for 11 deliveries where he hit two fours to put up 13 runs on the board at a strike rate of 118.18. Shaw looked totally out of colour as he eventually fell prey to Varun Chakaravarthy who rattled the stumps to send him packing.
As the opening saga has been for Delhi, Shaw's poor run has somehow been balanced by David Warner's healthy scores, as the Australian has been one of the few bright spots for Delhi in the ongoing IPL 2023. While the Delhi top order tumbled against Kolkata's spin force, Warner stood his ground to score another fifty to lead Delhi's chase.
Earlier, batting first, Kolkata's batting order was stormed out of service by the Delhi bowlers as the Nitish Rana-led side managed to put up only 127 runs on the board with as many as eight of their batters falling on scores less than 10. Jason Roy, who was playing his debut match for Kolkata, notched up 43 runs up the order to which, Andre Russell added 38 in the final phase of the innings to help KKR cross the 100-run mark. Mandeep Singh (12) was the only other batter to score in double digits. For Delhi, Ishant Sharma, Anrich Nortje, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav picked up two wickets each.
