Twitter Reactions: Afghan storm blows away Pakistan by eight wickets in Chennai

Afghanistan beat Pakistan by eight wickets in Match 22 of the ODI World Cup 2023 at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Afghanistan steamrolled Pakistan by eight wickets in Match 22 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 on Monday, October 23 at MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai. After opting to bat first, Pakistan posted a good score of 282/7 in their allotted 50 overs riding on Babar Azam’s innings of 74 (92).

In reply, Afghanistan started their chase in emphatic fashion with openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran getting involved in a massive 130-run stand for the first wicket off 127 balls.

Shaheen Afridi brought his team back into the game by dismissing Gurbaz (65 off 53) in the 22nd over. Following his dismissal, Rahmat Shah walked in at number three and added 60 runs for the second wicket with Zadran (87 off 113), who was dismissed in the 34th over by Hasan Ali.

Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi (48* off 45) walked in at number four and made sure there were no more hiccups in the chase. The Afghan skipper got involved in an unbeaten 96-run stand with Rahmat Shah (77* off 84) and helped his side chase down the target in 49 overs and register their third win in the history of the ODI World Cup.

Earlier in the day, Pakistan got off to a decent start as their openers Abdullah Shafique (58 off 75) and Imam-ul-Haq (17 off 22) added 56 runs for the first wicket off 61 balls. Captain Babar Azam walked in number three after Azmatullah Omarzai accounted for Imam ul Haq.

Babar held one end and played a brilliant innings of 74 (92) while wickets began to fall at the other. Shafique, Mohammad Rizwan (8 off 10), and Saud Shakeel (25 off 34) all departed within a space of 54 runs as Afghanistan made a great comeback to leave Pakistan on 163/4 after 34 overs. Contributions from Shadab Khan (40 off 38) and Iftikhar Ahmed (40 off 27) took their side to a good score of 282/7.

Noor Ahmad was the pick of the bowlers for Afghanistan on his World Cup debut as he scalped 3/49 in ten overs while Naveen-ul-Haq (2/52, 7 overs) picked up two wickets.
