Najmul Hossain Shanto’s century in the third innings followed by Taskin Ahmed’s four-wicket haul in the fourth helped Bangladesh brush aside Afghanistan by 546 runs to clinch the one-off Test on Day 4 at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
Chasing a humongous 662-run target, the Afghan openers succumbed under pressure quite early as Ibrahim Zadran and Abdul Malik were sent packing with less than 10 runs on the board at the close of play on Day 3. Notably, Hashmatullah Shahidi, who got retired hurt on the previous day, was replaced by Bahir Shah as a concussion substitute during the chase.
Speaking about the match, Rahmat Shah remained steady and carved out a delicate 73-ball 30, which featured two boundaries. However, a spirited bowling performance by the Bangla Tigers on the back of a mammoth target proved to be quite challenging for the Afghan side.
Taskin Ahmed and Shoriful Islam operated in tandem as they ripped through the middle and lower order with ease. While Taskin recorded a four-wicket haul for 37 runs in his nine overs, Shoriful got three scalps in his account for mere 28 runs in his 10 overs.
Meanwhile, Ebadot Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz too got one wicket apiece to wrap up the solitary Test. In the process, Afghanistan were restricted to a meagre 115 runs, as the Litton Das-led side emerged victorious by 546 runs to clinch the red-ball clash.
With this, Bangladesh recorded their biggest win and the third-largest victory overall in the format. Najmul Hossain Shanto was adjudged Player of the Match for registering twin centuries as he scored 146 runs and 124 runs in the first and the second innings respectively.
