In the first One Day International (ODI) clash between Bangladesh and New Zealand at the University Oval, Dunedin, the visiting team won the toss and elected to bowl first, anticipating the looming rain. The batting conditions were challenging initially, witnessing Shoriful Islam's impactful two-wicket burst in the opening over. However, Tom Latham and Will Young showed resilience, steering New Zealand through a difficult phase amidst intermittent rain interruptions. The match was eventually shortened to 30 overs.

Following the rain break, New Zealand capitalised, scoring a staggering 131 runs in just 10.4 overs, with Young smashing a rapid 105. Latham complemented the innings with a brisk 92. The hosts set a formidable target of 239, later revised to 245 for Bangladesh due to the rain-curtailed match. The pitch offered substantial assistance to bowlers early on.

Bangladesh grappled with adverse weather conditions, utilising their primary pacers when the ball was moving, only to face limitations after the second rain break. This placed pressure on Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Soumya Sarkar, who struggled to contain the run flow, leaving the visitors in a challenging position.

New Zealand’s composed bowling unit produced clinical victory

During Bangladesh's chase, debutant Josh Clarkson made an impact for the Kiwis, claiming crucial wickets of Anamul Haque and Litton Das. Rachin Ravindra further dented Bangladesh's momentum by dismissing Mushfiqur Rahim. Afif Hossain’s aggressive 38 off 28 balls injected some life into the chase, but New Zealand's composed bowling unit, featuring Clarkson, Adam Milne, and Ish Sodhi with two wickets each, proved effective.

Jacob Duffy, Ravindra, and debutant William O'Rourke also contributed with wickets. The Black Caps secured a comfortable victory as Bangladesh struggled to build momentum during the chase. Questionable shot selection aside, credit also goes to the Kiwi bowlers for consistently posing challenging queries to the Bangladeshi batting lineup.

Will Young's absolute stunner:

In a remarkable display of athleticism, Will Young executed a breathtaking catch during the match. Shoriful attempted a big shot off a slower ball but mistimed it, sending the ball high into the air. Young initially positioned himself at deep mid-wicket, adjusting to the trajectory. Despite a challenging reverse cup attempt, he adjusted swiftly, stretching backwards with one hand to secure the catch. Momentum almost took him over the rope, but Young skillfully prevented it, landing safely within the boundary.
