Faf du Plessis and Leus du Plooy looked unstoppable as Joburg registered a 10-wicket win over MI Cape Town in the ongoing SA20 2024 league. Notably, the rain played a spoilsport as the game was reduced to eight overs as both teams were looking for a win at Newlands to stay alive in the competition.
Batting first, Cape Town opener Rassie van der Dussen, who hit a magnificent century against Joburg earlier in the season, failed to get going as he could manage to score only 16 runs off 18 deliveries. For an eight-over game, his strike rate seemed to be unsatisfactory but yet the home team posted 80 runs on the board.
Skipper Keiron Pollard played a blistering knock of 33* runs off just 10 deliveries while Rick Rickleton made 23 runs off 16 deliveries. Imran Tahir was the star with the bowl for Joburg as the veteran spinner picked up two wickets while Nandre Burger and Lizaad Williams proved to be economical.
When it came to the chase, Joburg were set a target of 98 runs as per the DLS method. However, Du Plessis and Du Plooy hammered Cape Townβs bowlers to win the match in just 5.4 overs. Skipper Faf hit 50* off just 20 deliveries while Plooy made 41* runs off 14 deliveries. Cape Town bowlers looked clueless in the middle as Joburg picked up a sensational win to stay alive in the race.
They started the season on the back foot but are slowly gaining momentum. With the win, Joburg now moved to number four on the points table with 13 points in eight games. Meanwhile, Cape Town are once again having a tough time as the Kieron Pollard-led side has nine points from eight matches and is at the bottom of the table.
As things stand, either of the teams can qualify for the playoffs of the ongoing SA20 2024. For Cape Town to qualify, they need Joburg and Pretoria Capitals to drop points in the remaining matches, while the Faf du Plessis-led side canβt afford to relax as they are still in a tight spot.
