The exhilarating action continued in Ashes 2023 as Australia resumed their first innings on Day 3 on 311/5 trailing by 82 runs. Alex Carey (52*) and Usman Khawaja (126*) were well set at the crease and continued their 91-run stand. Carey looked to take the attack on Australia and quickly moved into the 60s with consecutive boundaries against James Anderson.

However, the veteran seamer got the better of him by breaching his defense with an in-swinger. Carey departed for 66 as the 118-run stand between him and Khawaja ended. Captain Pat Cummins walked in next and swung his bat around and started dealing in sixes.

But after a few good overs for Australia, England skipper Ben Stokes tightened the screws as he brought five men right close to Khawaja to stop him from rotating strike. The plan worked immediately as the southpaw lost his stumps in desperation to score runs.

Khawaja departed for a well-made 141 and added 34 runs for the seventh wicket with Cummins. Following his dismissal, England seamers tormented the Aussie tail with a barrage of bouncers, and the ploy paid dividends. Nathan Lyon got dismissed as he got caught by Ben Duckett on the boundary. Scott Boland was the next prey as he fended a bouncer straight to Ollie Pope at silly point.

Seeing himself run out of partners, Cummins (38) also got out trying to pull a short ball and found Ben Stokes at deep mid-wicket. As a result, Australia got all out on 386 trailing England by seven runs in the first innings. Stuart Broad (3/68) and Ollie Robinson (3/55) were the pick of the bowlers for England.

Australia get two early wickets in the second innings

England started their second innings in a completely contrasting style to the first innings as openers Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett were quite watchful batting under overcast conditions. Duckett (19) once again failed to get going as he edged the ball to Cameron Green at gully against Pat Cummins. Australia got their second wicket three balls later as Scott Boland found the edge of Zak Crawley which went straight to Alex Carey.

Australia were all over the English batter as they were reeling at 28/2 after 10.3 overs before rain stopped the play eventually. Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz with reactions on another action-packed day of Test cricket.
