Chamari Athapaththu-led Team Sri Lanka flaunted class in the group stage as they beat Bangladesh by 7 wickets in the fifth clash of the ongoing Women's T20 World Cup 2023 in South AfrWith this win, Sri Lanka registered their second consecutive victory in the marquee event and are currently sitting at the top of Group A and they now seem like a quite sturdy side in the group stages of this edition of the World Cup.

Opting to bat first, the Bangladesh Women had an excellent batting powerplay, but skipper Chamari Athapaththu and Inoka Ranaweera slowed them down, and helped force the wickets that saw Bangladesh slump to 126 for 8 on a straightforward Newlands surface.

Harshitha Samarawickrama's carnage takes Lanka home

Bangladesh Women's teen sensation Marufa Akter was the pick of the bowlers as she ripped apart Sri Lanka batting lineup with two consecutive scalps in her second over itself, which had initially sent a shockwave in the Sri Lankan dugout. Akter went on to dismiss Vishmi Gunaratne and Anushka Sanjeewani off back-to-back deliveries.

But Akter's magic with the ball was short-lived, as Sri Lanka's Harshitha Samarawickrama took it upon herself to take the islanders home with a win. While Athapaththu took the onus of rotating the strike, Harshitha's job was to keep the scoreboard moving quick and fast, and she precisely did that.

Finding her rhythm was what Harshitha did for a while. And when half the innings were done, she began to find the boundary. Her most profitable stretch came in the 16th over, when she crashed two sixes and a four in the space of four deliveries. That burst put her innings into high gear, and she never climbed down where Nilakshi de Silva kept her company. The duo put on a partnership of 124  runs with Harshitha smashing an unbeaten 69 of 50 deliveries while Nilakshi making 41 runs.
