Earlier in the day, after opting to bat first, Australia lost their opener Mitchell Marsh (9 off 15) in just the fourth over of the innings. After the early blow, Steve Smith (71 off 68) and David Warner (104 off 93) added 132 runs for the second wicket off 118 balls.

While Smith got dismissed due to a spectacular catch at point by Roelof van der Merwe, Warner went on to register his second consecutive hundred of the tournament. The southpaw also registered the second most number of hundreds in ODI World Cup history (6) levelling Sachin Tendulkar’s tally.

Glenn Maxwell shattered record books with his breathtaking hundred

Marnus Labuschagne also made a valuable contribution with his knock of 62 off 47. However, it was Glenn Maxwell who stole all the limelight with his record-shattering innings of 106 off 44 balls as he registered the fastest hundred in World Cup history off just 40 balls.

Courtesy of their marvellous batting performances, Australia posted a monumental score of 399/8 in their allotted 50 overs and went on to register a win by the largest margin in the history of the tournament by 309 runs.
