England showed their mettle and made an incredible comeback in the second ODI of the three-match series against West Indies. After losing the first match, skipper Jos Buttler and his teammates were heavily criticized for continuing with their poor form, which saw England getting knocked out in the league phase of the recently concluded ODI World Cup. West Indies, on the other hand, failed to step up with the bat, which resulted in an embarrassing defeat.
Batting first, the home team was 23/4 as Gus Atkinson and Sam Curran were ruthless with the new ball. Curran particularly picked up three wickets early on, which set the tone of the match. Later, skipper Shai Hope (68) built an important 129-run partnership with Sherfane Rutherford (63), which helped West Indies make a strong comeback. However, Liam Livingstone picked up three wickets in quick succession which completely derailed West Indies’ momentum.
The home team was bundled out for 202 runs, which was not enough to get over the line. Despite recent setbacks, England played an attacking brand of cricket as opener Phil Jacks gave a perfect start. The 25-year-old hit 73 runs but there were some nervous times, especially when Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett got out rather early.
However, in-form batter Harry Brook took care of the business after the business after two quick dismissals. Skipper Buttler too played brilliantly as he hit 58* runs off 45 deliveries. Brook finished on 43* runs as England won the match by six wickets and with over 17 overs remaining. West Indies bowlers looked average for the majority part of the time as both the batting and bowling departments will have to improve ahead of the final ODI of the series.
The Shai Hope-led side has the quality but consistency is the one area that they lack. In order to get back to the top, the Caribbeans will have to push each other as the third ODI will be a huge test of their mentality.
