IPL 2024 Auction: Sunrisers Hyderabad strike gold by acquiring Wanindu Hasaranga at his base price

Star Sri Lanka wrist spinner Wanindu Hasaranga was surprisingly sold for his base price of INR 1.50 Crore to Sunrisers Hyderabad during the IPL 2024 mini-auction on Tuesday, December 19 at Coca-Cola Arena in Dubai. The 26-year-old was part of the second set in the auction but surprisingly no franchise showed interest in acquiring his services. However, SRH showed a willingness to buy the mystery spinner and got him at a steal deal for just INR 1.50 crore. 

Notably, Hasaranga is one of the most sought-after T20 bowlers in the world having performed exceptionally in tournaments across the globe. He was a part of Royal Challengers Bangalore ever since his debut in 2021 and played 26 matches for the franchise picking 35 wickets at an average of 21.37 and an economy of 8.13.

The Galle-born cricketer was bought for a whopping 10.75 Crore by RCB in the 2022 auction but was surprisingly released by the franchise ahead of IPL 2024.

Hasaranga was the second-highest wicket-taker of the tournament in IPL 2022 having scalped 26 wickets from 16 innings at an average of 16.53 and an economy of 7.54. Furthermore, he also finished as the highest wicket-taker in back-to-back editions of the T20 World Cup with 16 and 15 wickets to his name respectively in the 2021 and 2022 editions.

Hasaranga missed the ODI World Cup 2023 due to a hamstring injury

The wrist-spinner recently underwent a successful surgery after a hamstring injury ruled him out of the ODI World Cup 2023. He’s currently on his path to recovery and hence a few franchises were skeptical about his availability for the mega event forcing them to not place any bids for the star spinner.

However, if all goes well for Hasaranga and he’s available to play for SRH for the entire season, the franchise has struck gold by having him on their roster as he’s a proven wicket-taker in the shortest format.
