A full house crowd in Mohali got their money's worth after Mumbai Indians completed a sensational run chase in a high-scoring affair against Punjab Kings. The five-time champions chased down a target in excess of 200 runs for a second game running after blistering half-centuries from Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, avenging their loss against the Punjab Kings earlier in the IPL 2023 season.
Mumbai Indians' run chase got off to the worst possible start after influential skipper Rohit Sharma was dismissed for a duck in the very first over of the second innings. But the visitors weren't bothered by Rohit's cheap departure as young Indian opener Ishan Kishan took on the Punjab bowlers in the powerplay.
Mumbai's destructive all-rounder Cameron Green, who was looking to launch every ball into orbit, also departed after a brisk cameo on the last delivery of the powerplay. Much like the first innings, Mumbai were conservative in the first half of the second innings. However, the visitors came to life in the 11th over of the match, dispatching Rahul Chahar for 14 runs.
But the match was titled in the favour of the five-time champions when Suryakumar Yadav broke free against Sam Curran in the 13th over. He smashed the diminutive English all-rounder for four consecutive boundaries to register a blistering half-century. Meanwhile, Ishan also kept his foot on the accelerator with a fiery half-century.
The duo were making a mockery of the chase before Nathan Ellis broke the 116-run partnership by dismissing SKY. Kishan also departed in the next over as Punjab got rid of both the set batters in quick succession to make a comeback in the contest. However, their hopes were shortlived as Tilak Verma and Tim David came out all guns blazing to take their side home comfortably, sealing the highest successful chase in Mohali.
Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma's carnage helps PBKS to 4th successive 200+ score
It was the visiting skipper Rohit Sharma, who won the toss and elected to bowl first after a cheeky conversation with his great friend and Indian teammate Shikhar Dhawan. Punjab Kings' inning hit an early roadblock after Prabhsimran Singh was dismissed in the very second over of the match.
Despite that early blow, Punjab Kings were off to a solid start in the powerplay, thanks to skipper Shikhar Dhawan's brisk innings. However, he fell prey to the guile of veteran leggie Piyush Chawla just after the powerplay. His dismissal saw the visitors assert their dominance with the ball, especially the spinners.
The home side were 78/2 after the ten-over mark and were hoping to post a total in excess of 180 runs on a beautiful batting track. However, they got more than what they wished for at the midway stage in the first innings after Liam Livingstone and Jitesh Sharma put on a show with the bat.
Livingstone, who took a liking to his compatriot Jofra Archer, smashing him for three consecutive sixes in his final over of a nightmare spell, registered 82 runs off just 42 deliveries. His batting partner, Jitesh Sharma, wasn't too far behind the English all-rounder as he smashed 49 runs in just 27 balls to take Punjab to 214 runs, becoming the first team to breach the 200-run mark in four consecutive matches in IPL history.
