An aggressive 29-ball 44 from Gareth Delany after Curtis Campher and Mark Adair strangulated Netherlands with the ball scripted Ireland’s comprehensive victory in Abu Dhabi.
Delany, who made comeback after being dropped in the last T20 series, struck five boundaries and a couple of fours in his calculated knock and strung a match-winning third-wicket partnership worth 59 alongside Paul Stirling, who scored a sedate 30 off 39 after the Netherlands removed Kevin O’Brien and Andy Balbirnie inside the powerplay.
However, Ireland ensured to gun down the paltry 107-run target in just 15.1 overs to their net run rate a big favour right at the onset.
Campher attack
The Netherlands had only the toss going their way and were made to regret even for that instantly as opener Ben Cooper ran himself out in the very first over while setting the target for Ireland. They still did not look in as dire straits until the fateful 10th over, when Campher snared four wickets off successive deliveries to doom his opposition.
He successfully reversed the on-field not-out call for Colin Ackerman, with UltraEdge clearly showing a spike before the wicketkeeper caught him behind. Campher then pinned Ryan Ten Doeschate and Scott Edwards lbw, and again successfully reviewed his shout for the latter to cap off his hat-trick.
On the next ball, he made Roelof van der Merwe chop one onto his stumps to put himself in the elite company of Lasith Malinga and Rashid Khan, the only two before him to have pulled off the feat in the format.
Max O’Dowd leads the charge in adversity
The assault saw Netherlands slip from 51/2 to 51/6 within a blink of an eye – quite literally – with Max O’Dowd witnessing the wreckage unfold from the other end. Nearly half the runs his team managed came off his blade – he scored 51 off 47 including seven fours – but the opener had no one else to give him even a semblance of support.
Dowd holed out to long-on off Adair, no less threatening as he registered the cheapest spell for an Irishman in the World Cup: 3/9. That Netherlands even managed to cross the 100-run mark was thanks to skipper Pieter Seelaar and Logan van Beek, who scored 21 and 11, respectively, to ensure Ireland were chasing a triple-digit target.
Delany, Stirling see off the chase
The Netherlands were looking for a miracle themselves to fancy defending an undercooked total. They struck twice in the powerplay, with O’Brien falling for 9 off 10 to Brandon Glover, while Fred Klassen got Balbirnie caught inside the ring, but the Delany-Stirling duo kept Ireland on track. Delany was cleaned up Seelaar, with Ireland needing just 12 for the win, of which Campher scored 7 to seal his team’s comprehensive victory.

Will be a tough pill to swallow for the @KNCBcricket boys.
But all that pressure leading up to the tournament has now gone. I am sure they will show what a fine team they are in the next 2 games.
Would love to see them come out have a bit of fun, and enjoy showing off their skill— Peter Borren (@dutchiepdb) October 18, 2021
