In their one off One Day International between South Africa and Ireland at Benoni, Ireland achieved a thumping loss at the hands of the Proteas. Earlier in the day, it was William Porterfield who won the toss as Ireland elected to bowl first.
There was no stopping the duo of De Kock – Bavuma as they compiled a 159 run partnership for the first wicket. While De Kock missed out on a deserving century, Bavuma went on strike a scintillating hundred on debut.
The batsmen continued to dominate as Duminy struck 52(43)* while Behardien smashed 50(22) with 3 maximums. South Africa went on to post a massive total of 354/5 in their quota of 50 overs.
The Ireland bowlers were unfazed by the hosts batting lineup. Almost everyone went for runs. Craig struck thrice while Kevin O’Brien also got a couple of wickets. It was always going to be difficult to chase this total and Ireland had no clue.
Ireland failed to get a good start. The South African bowlers cashed in on their experience as they kept taking wickets at regular intervals. The Ireland batsmen failed to rotate strike and the thriving pressure of the target kept them on their toes.
Stirling and Kevin O’Brien made useful contributions with their 40s as the rest of the batting lineup failed to hog any limelight. Ireland were bundled for 148 with almost 20 overs left.
Duminy got 4 wickets as he was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas. Phangiso and Parnell also got a couple of wickets each as South Africa won by an astounding margin of 206 runs. Bavuma was declared the man of the match.
Twitter was abuzz with tweets related to the low key game. While there were praises sung over for the talented Bavuma, Phangiso and Duminy also managed to get lauded for their splendid effort. Ireland now play another ODI game against Australia before returning back home.
Here are some of the Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game:
