Adelaide Strikers slumped to yet another loss in the ongoing Big Bash League (BBL) season, this time against the Sydney Sixers. This turned out to be their seventh loss in 11 matches and the chances of them going into the knockouts are lessened even more now. The defending champions will have to win all their remaining matches now and then hope for some of the results to go their way to play the semi-final in the fortnight’s time.
Having said that, nothing could be taken away from the Sixers who were absolutely clinical in their execution of plans on the day. After opting to bowl first, they were quick to make inroads. The Strikers were left struggling at 29/3 in the powerplay itself. A decent partnership followed between Jake Lehmann and Jonathan Wells. Both played cautiously and found it tough to up the ante.
The former scored 46 off 45 balls while Wells somehow managed to score 23 runs. But the final impetus to the innings was given by Michael Neser with his unbeaten 31 off 21 deliveries with two sixes and one four. Eventually, they mustered 124 runs for the loss of eight wickets after 20 overs.
Hughes and Henriques ace the chase
The Sixers were put in early trouble by Michael Neser and Billy Stanlake by sending back the in-form Josh Phillipe and James Vince. But the likes of Daniel Hughes and the skipper Moises Henriques found their groove at the right time for the time.
They stitched the third-century stand of the day in the BBL doubleheader and won the game for the team. The duo added an unbeaten 106 runs for the third wicket and in the process, also slammed half-centuries as Henriques finished the proceedings with a huge six to end on 61* off just 31 balls with five fours and four sixes to his name.
The Sixers have now trumped the Renegades with a better NRR to climb to the second spot while the Hurricanes are sitting pretty at the top with 18 points.
