The debutants stole all the thunder on Day 1 of the first Test match between England and New Zealand at the Lord’s in London. While Devon Conway announced himself in style by smashing a century, Ollie Robinson also got off to a flying start as he picked two wickets. Entering the contest, New Zealand handed the debut cap to Conway while England played with two new players including Robinson and James Bracey.

The toss went in the favour of the Blackcaps skipper Kane Williamson and he elected to put the total on the board first. The new opening partnership of Tom Latham and Conway looked decent in the middle as both the batters were able to middle the ball well. The duo collected 58 runs in 16 overs.

Meanwhile, the newbie pacer Ollie gave the first breakthrough to his team on the last ball of the 16th over by picking the crucial wicket of Latham. Latham was soon followed by skipper Williamson to the pavilion as James Anderson uprooted the stumps of the opposition skipper while he was playing at 13.

While New Zealand were coping up with the dismissal of Tom and Kane, they received another blow in the form of Ross Taylor. Robinson picked his second wicket of the day in the form of Taylor, who could add just 14 runs to the scoreboard. Halfway through the game, the Blackcaps were losing the plot as they were languishing at 114 for three in 37.5 overs.

Devon Conway shines at Home of Cricket

While the hosts were hoping to prove their dominance in the game, Devon Conway emerged as the knight in shining armor for the Kiwis. The 29-year-old flaunted his class and talent at the home of cricket in his maiden appearance for the Kiwis. While the wickets were falling at one end, Conway kept his calm and continued middling the ball to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Conway gave his international career a surreal start by becoming only the 12th NZ batsman to score a hundred on debut. He reached his ton in 163 runs and played a classic Test knock to bail New Zealand out of the trouble. The debutant along with Henry Nicholls stitched an unbeaten partnership of 132 runs.

With the stumps of Day 1, both Devon and Nicholls marched back to the pavilion with their heads high as they remained unbeaten on 136 and 46 respectively. New Zealand also ended the day with a slight edge over the hosts with a score of 246 for three.
