India took the field at the Kennington Oval in London to play their first warm-up game before the ICC Champions Trophy begins next week. The defending champions were up against New Zealand, who have been in decent ODI form. Williamson called right at the toss and elected to bat first.
After losing Guptill early, Williamson himself along with Luke Ronchi added 43 runs for the second wicket before the skipper edged one straight to the lone wide slip fielder Ajinkya Rahane. Shami was the bowler who struck again to send Neil Broom back the next delivery to peg New Zealand back in a swift start. Ronchi held the key and batted well to register a half-century. The wicket-keeper batsman was clean bowled by Jadeja to have New Zealand reeling at 110/5 in the 21st over.
New Zealand were sinking deep into the mire when Grandhomme, in an attempt to put pressure on Jadeja, danced down the wicket and missed the ball. Dhoni, with his calm head and quick hands, was smart enough to whip the bails off in a fraction of a second.
MS Dhoni has been a subject of discussion in the last couple of years with his quick hands behind the stumps. He was always quick but his street-smart act behind the stumps in the recent past has thrilled audiences all around the world. Whether it is sticking his leg out to stop a late-cut played by the batsmen or to parry the throw onto the stumps to trick the batsman in a run out situation, Dhoni has mastered every trick in the trade.
He isn’t striking the ball as well as he used to but Dhoni has reinvented himself as a wicket keeper. Grandhomme’s stumping wasn’t too much challenge to this 35-year old, who is capable of producing stellar stumpings behind the wicket.
