When the Ashes 2017-18 had commenced, little did the fans expect that it would end up being a one sided affair. But all the credit goes to the Steve Smith-led Australia for coming up with thoroughly dominating performances throughout the series. The fortunes remained pretty much the same for the visiting English side on the final day of the series as well.
They were staring at an embarrassing defeat yet again after reeling on 68/4 on the penultimate day in their second innings. Not to mention, they still had a deficit over 200 to overhaul. However, their little ray of hope still remained intact with their skipper Joe Root fighting it out with an unbeaten score by the end of day 4.
The day 5 of the Sydney Test saw a quick wrap up from Australia. Needing just 6 more wickets to cap off a win, Pat Cummins led the Australian charge on the day. He dismissed Jonny Bairstow who had shown some serious resistance of 143 deliveries for his 38. Moeen Ali soon joined the party to dismiss Moeen Ali, who had has a season to forget thus far.
Meanwhile, English skipper Joe Root watched the proceedings from the other end. He rallied past his fifty but had to unfortunately walk off the park after being retired hurt. He headed back to the pavilion on 58 that came off 167 balls. The updates on his condition still remains to be ascertained. As soon as Root walked off the park, the inevitable only got preponed.
Pat Cummins made short work of the tail-enders and England ended up bundling out for mere 180. It was the same track that had seen the Australian batsmen rack up over 600 runs in their first innings a day ago. England lost by an innings and 123 runs.
With the dominating win, Australia sealed the Ashes 2017-18 by a dominating scoreline of 4-0. Pat Cummins was adjudged Man of the Match for his 8-wicket haul in the game. Aussie skipper Steve Smith walked away with the Player of the Series accolade owing to his stellar run of form in the series.
