It has been tough two days for India at Rajkot. The visitors are in the driver’s seat in the first Test after Hundreds from Joe Root, Moeen Ali and Ben Stokes, making a strong statement for the rest of the series. They had their share of luck though. Butterfingers were the main culprit for India as they dropped 5 catches in the first four sessions of the Test, 4 off Unfortunate Umesh Yadav’s bowling!
Alastair Cook was dropped by Ajinkya Rahane first over of the Test match. Then later catches were dropped of Haseeb Hameed and Ben Stokes off Umesh Yadav’s bowling. This morning Stokes was dropped twice by Wriddhiman Saha in two overs. Twitterati went crazy over Indian fielders after their dismal show on the field.
People tweeted that they were missing Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman in the slips who were as safe as house. Some compared Wriddhiman Saha with the fielder in Lagaan movie who dropped catches in the important match. With the US election hangover still on, there were tweets saying Donald Trump being elected as President ain’t a tragedy but India dropping catches was. Many were of the view that these errors on the field would allow England score 550+ and then India will be fighting to save this Test, very rightly so!
Luckily for India, Alastair Cook and Haseeb Hameed’s dropped catches didn’t cost much. However, they will rue dropping Ben Stokes. After being dropped on 61, he went on to add 67 more runs. This is the first time since 2009 that three batsmen from visiting team have scored hundreds in the same innings in India, last being Tillakaratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Prasanna Jayawardene at Motera. India will have to bat out of their skins in the first innings if they are to give themselves any chance of staying in the hunt in the first Test.
Here is how Twitter reacted on the Indian fielders sloppy fielding:
Umesh Yadev:
Dropped Four Catches of his bowling!
His only wicket came with Caught and Bowl!
He also took one catch of other bowler!

That reverse is good news for England. Not as good as all the dropped catches, but still good news

Will be miracle if India win this match with these slip fielders. Note that Rahane, Vijay are best slip fielders in this squad. #INDvENG

India's slip catching was top notch in Lanka like a 1000rs note highest worth, useless now. #IndvEng

Catches win matches, not something going India's way.
Fine fast bowling with sloppy hands at slip.#IndvsEng— Sajal Mishra (@sajalvmishra) November 9, 2016
Why is Umesh in a big hurry to get rid of the ball every time he catches it #INDvENG

True leader, Virat ensures Vijay doesn't drop it.#IndvsEng

Happens when you have an off day. This doesn't make Saha the worst keeper in the world. #IndvsEng

The manner in which Umesh has smiled through the fielding bloopers of his bowling has been a really admirable. Great character #IndvsEng
