After their defeat against Cape Town Blitz, Durban Heat registered their first victory of the Mzansi Super League (MSL), beating Tshwane Spartans by 10 runs (DLS Method) at Kingsmead in Durban. Rain threatened to play spoilsport and both teams were allotted 19 overs each. Meanwhile, the Spartans slumped to their second defeat of the event in just their third match.

Abbott stands out

The Heat won the toss and had no hesitation to field first and the decision didn’t backfire by any means for the reason that they restricted Tshwane to 139 in the 20 overs. Gihahn Cloete and Theunis de Bruyn opened the batting, but speedster Tladi Bokako dismissed de Bruyn for seven to draw first blood. Tony de Zorzi was thereafter nipped out by Albie Morkel.

Left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj churned out the prized scalp of AB de Villiers, who scored 10 runs. Sikandar Raza crawled to 20 runs at a run-ball and perished to Kyle Abbott. Meanwhile, Cloete didn’t drop the gun and scored a handy 55 runs from 43 balls with seven boundaries. Abbot turned out to be the Heat’s standout bowler with four wickets for 27 runs.

Heat cruise home

Hashim Amla and Morne van Wyk got Durban off to a handsome start with a stand of 34 runs from 27 balls after which Lutho Sipmala broke the partnership with van Wyk’s wicket. Heinrich Klaasen joined Amla and they made sure that the scoreboard keeps ticking. However, both batsmen perished in quick succession with the Heat needing quite a few runs for victory.

David Miller couldn’t make an impact either and became Jeevan Mendis’ victim. Khaya Zondo and Albie Morkel took the bowling by the scruff of their necks and well and truly put their team in the driver’s seat. While Zondo scored 25 from 11 balls, Morkel racked up 26 runs from 12 balls. Rain arrived in the 17th over at a time when the Heat were ahead by eight runs.
