Ravichandran Ashwin, reminding fans of his last year’s ‘Mankad’ incident, almost pulled off another one in the on-going IPL 2020 in the UAE. After returning from injury to the Delhi Capitals’ line-up, Ashwin faced a dominant Royal Challengers Bangalore side at the Dubai International Stadium.

While delivering impressive performance with the ball, Ashwin scalped one wicket for 26 runs as the Shreyas Iyer-led side clinched a 59-run victory and paved its way to the top of the points table.

But one incident which caught the eye of every fan was the return of Ashwin’s ‘Mankad’ controversy. The off-spinner gave Aaron Finch a warning for leaving his crease at the non-striker’s end. It all happened in the third over of the first innings when Ashwin came into the attack.

Finch walked out of his crease and Ashwin was expected to repeat his last year’s much-debated ‘Mankading’. However, to the surprise of everyone, he allowed Finch to return to his crease and gave the Australian a stare and a ‘final warning’.

Ravichandran Ashwin also tweeted over the incident

Post the match, the off-spinner even took to social media and reacted to the incident. “Let’s make it clear !! First and final warning for 2020. I am making it official and don’t blame me later on. @RickyPonting #runout #nonstriker @AaronFinch5 and I are good buddies btw,” he wrote on Twitter.

Ashwin had received a lot of flak last year after ‘Mankading’ Rajasthan Royals’ Jos Buttler. While some felt that it was a legal mode of dismissal, few argued that it was against the spirit of the gentleman’s game. Ashwin was a part of Kings XI Punjab last year but he shifted his base to DC this year after being traded to the Delhi-based franchise.

Interestingly, ahead of the start of much-awaited IPL 2020, current DC head coach Ricky Ponting had spoken to Ashwin on the matter in UAE and had suggested him not to ‘Mankad’ any non-striker. Ponting had even claimed that he and Ashwin had come to a common ground over the ‘Mankad’ debate.

Ashwin evidently followed the head coach’s suggestion as he issued a warning to Finch instead of jumping the gun. After the incident, cameras panned to the Delhi Capitals dugout where Ponting was having a sneaky smile on his face.

Twitter, as expected, was also flooded with photos and memes of the hilarious incident. Several names of the cricket fraternity including Aakash Chopra felt that Ashwin missed out on a run-out chance. Many fans even started trolling Buttler after Ashwin showed mercy towards Finch.
