After an action-packed Test series, India and South Africa will now be locking horns in a three-match ODI series, the first of which will be played Boland Park in Paarl. A new-look Team India under KL Rahul’s leadership will be up for an exciting challenge in the 50-overs format. All eyes will also be on Virat Kohli who will be playing as a non-captain.

As the Men In Blue look forward to starting on a winning note, a promising all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has got an opportunity to don the Indian jersey and that is what has stood out as a wonderful moment before the first ODI gets underway. As soon as it was officially confirmed that the Kolkata Knight Riders opener would be making his ODI debut, the passionate cricket fans took to social media to congratulate him.

Twitter reacts to Venkatesh Iyer’s ODI debut

Just two months after making his first-ever appearance for India in the shortest format during the home series against New Zealand, emerging talent Venkatesh Iyer is all set to make his ODI debut in the series-opener against the Proteas on Wednesday. This news was also confirmed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on their official Twitter handle.

The IPL 2021 is where Venkatesh Iyer started taking baby steps towards stardom. He was one of the chief architects of KKR’s turnaround last season as he amassed 370 runs in 10 matches at a strike rate of 128.47. Interestingly, Iyer had made his IPL debut in the UAE leg of IPL 2021.

His opening pyrotechnics stunned all the teams in the second leg of last year’s marquee tournament. Languishing at the second-last position in the points table during the first leg, the two-time winners staged a remarkable comeback in the second leg and made the finals where they lost to Chennai Super Kings.

Coming back to the contest, South Africa have won the toss and elected to bat first. The Indian bowling attack spearheaded by Jasprit Bumrah would be hoping to make amends by making the new ball talk right away.
