The first ODI between Sri Lanka and Australia kicked off at Colombo with captain Steve Smith winning the toss and electing to field first. It turned out to be an interesting affair with the visitors winning their first match in the tour so far.
The match began in splendid fashion with Starc ripping apart Kusal’s stumps in the first over. While Mendis with his 67 helped SL recover from the early slump, they again fell into a shell after losing 3 quick wickets. However, Chandimal played a brilliant innings of 80 not out as he ensured his stay at the crease till the end to make sure SL reached a respectable total of 227/8.
Perera played a nice cameo of 21(14) in the death overs. As for Australia, Starc took 3 wickets and in the process became the fastest to reach 100 wickets in ODIs. Faulkner was the pick of the bowler with 4 wickets.
Chasing a modest total, Warner got out early but Finch and Smith took the proceedings ahead as both went on to score half centuries. In the end, SL didn’t apply much pressure to the Aussie batsmen as the game slipped away from their hands. While SL got wickets in the end, but it was a bit too late as Australia went on to win the game by 3 wickets.
Twitter kept everyone entertained with some superb tweets throughout the game. Right from lauding Starc for his milestone to trolling Finch for dropping a catch, right from lauding Australian batsmen to trolling Mathews for being quiet defensive as a captain. Here are some of the Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game.
Another little cheeky chasing not out for Faulkner? Don't mind if I do. #SLvAus

Sri Lanka should be fined for excessive appealing after the game.

Can’t remember the last time a one-day pitch spy like this. This is some Nabokov-level filthy turn. #SLvAus

Mathews' love for Dilruwan >>> Kohli's love for Rohit >>> Dhoni's love for Raina.

The time the third umpire took to make that decision was equivalent to the duration of Sri Lanka's national anthem. #SLvAUS

I'm honestly not sure any more what Finch has to do to earn my respect as a batsman. However, I assume it's possible. #SLvAUS
