It isn’t often that you see someone else get furious and fume at Virat Kohli. Not just because he is the captain but also because he is on point with whatever he does, someone who prefers to be at the top of his game in all the aspects of the game. But he blipped on the first ODI against South Africa and called for a run that wasn’t there and as a result, Shikhar Dhawan was run out by a country mile.

For the first time on the tour, it looked as if the left-handed opener will get a big score. He was playing all positive pulling out those shots and the ball was racing towards the boundary. When the South African bowlers tried the short stuff he pulled them and hit some crunch drives on the off-side. But on the 2nd ball of the 13th over he inside edged one from Chris Morris and though the ball didn’t deflect onto the stumps he had to walk back.

He wanted to flick the ball behind square but all he managed was an inside edge and the ball hit his pads. It tickled towards point and while Dhawan was trying to figure out what happened and where was the ball going his partner Kohli was already halfway down the pitch trying to sneak in a run. He just went for the run himself and Aiden Markram got the ball took his time, as he had plenty aimed and shot down the stumps at the non-striker’s end.

Dhawan who was batting on 35 from 29 balls having hit six boundaries was agitated and absolutely furious as there was no run. He ran only because Kohli had already committed to it. And it was evident if the ball would hit the stumps he wouldn’t even be in the frame. He would’ve wanted to capitalize on the start since he looked in really good touch and would’ve made an impact in the game but without any real fault of his own had to go.

He made it clear to Kohli up front and turned around to tell his captain that the single wasn’t a wise decision. Even after returning to the dressing room he was still muttering and describing the turn of events in an angry tone.

Twitterati got a sense of it as well and here is how they reacted:
