In what a game between two sides that have been languishing at the bottom of the points table, Gujarat Lions managed to emerge victorious in what was a stupendous run chase by them. Earlier, it was captain Suresh Raina who won the toss as Gujarat Lions elected to field first.
Ajinkya Rahane who has been out of touch lately failed again as he was dismissed for a duck in the very first over. However, Captain Steve Smith who missed the last game got going quickly. He and Rahul Tripathi together compiled 64 runs for the second wicket partnership in just 6 overs.
After both got out, it was Ben Stokes’ turn to take over. While he got a good start he failed to convert it again. MS Dhoni who has been going through a rough patch this season again failed to prove a point. Some quality batting by Manoj Tiwary and Ankit Sharma’s hitting propelled Gujarat Lions total to above 165.
However more was to follow as Andrew Tye playing his first game took a hat-trick in the last over. He also went on to pick a five-wicket haul as Gujarat Lions were restricted to 171/8 in their quota of 20 overs. Other bowlers were quite taken to the cleaners including Praveen Kumar.
Gujarat Lions were off to a rollicking start. Both openers Dwayne Smith and Brendon McCullum provided a fantastic display of pinch hitting. Combining for a partnership of 94 runs in just 9 overs, they never allowed Pune to get any momentum.
Both missed out on their fifties as Smith scored 47(30) while McCullum was stumped by Dhoni at 49(32). The quick wickets of the openers and Dinesh Karthik provided some onus to the Super Giants. However, they couldn’t hold it up as Captain Suresh Raina and Aaron Finch ensured there were no further hiccups in the Gujarat innings.
Pune bowlers had another poor day in the field. Their prime bowler Imran Tahir conceded 53 runs in his four overs and that’s enough, to sum up, their bowling performance. Gujarat Lions won the game handsomely by 7 wickets with 2 overs to spare.
Today’s victory was Gujarat Lions’ first win in this year’s IPL. With that loss, Rising Pune Super Giants fell to the bottom of the points table as they stare another poor season. Andrew Tye undoubtedly was rewarded the man of the match award for his 5/14.
