Two sides stranded in the middle of the table in the 7th edition of the Big Bash League (BBL) were up against each other. If Hobart Hurricane manages to go past the Brisbane Heat, this was to be their 5th straight win. After winning the toss, Heat skipper Brendon McCullum opted to bat first and set a target for the hosts.
Clive Rose started the proceedings for the Hurricanes and removed opener Sam Heazlett on the 4th ball of the innings. Skipper McCullum was joined by Joe Burn who after playing a couple of quiet overs. Joe Burns took the assault to the opposition while McCullum was happy giving the strike back to the aggressor. Burns was 4 off 9 balls, on 10th he hit the first six. In the next 2 overs, he hit 3 fours and 2 sixes. Heat finished the powerplay with 62 runs on the board for the loss of 1 wicket.
D’Arcy Short’s been in some amazing form this BBL with the bat, here his side asked him to bail them out with the ball. He didn’t disappoint as Burns miss-timed a delivery and was caught at long-off. McCullum took over from Burns and he hit a four and six in the next two overs. Cameron Boyce from his end didn’t give any freebies. He sent Alex Ross back to the pavilion when the batsman failed to read the googly.
McCullum completed his half-century off 35 balls which included 5 fours and a six. He got out to Tymal Mills which ruptured the scoring rate of the Heat. The Hurricane bowlers pulled things considerably down as they gave away just 58 runs in the last 10 overs. With contribution from Ben Cutting and Jimmy Peirson, Heat ended their innings on 165 runs for the loss of 8 wickets.
Alex Ross started the run chase with a four and collected another 6 off the next 3 balls. He wasn’t satisfied and went for the heave again which cost him his wicket. D’Arcy Short, tournament’s highest run-scorer has been terrific and he continued the same as he along with skipper George Bailey started building a partnership. Bailey fell for 19 runs off 21 balls but the 73-run stand with Short was a crucial one.
He completed yet another half-century off 29 balls. Daniel Christian walked in after the wicket of Bailey, smashed 23 runs which included 3 sixes off 9 balls and departed. Short’s vigil came to an end when he failed to read a slower ball from Steketee.
Ben McDermott hit 3 fours in the 17th over of the innings to take the game away from the Heat side. His innings of 30 off just 18 deliveries eventually meant that the Hurricane registered their 5th straight win.

Dan Christian stumbling his words in the post game interview.
Either he was carefully choosing his words, or had a mindblank— James Halliday (@JHalliday84) January 15, 2018
The Renegades and Hurricanes will hopefully lose to the Strikers, then Heat will win their final two games and make the finals. #BBL07

Just like Australia last night the @HeatBBL were 50 runs short and had no good bowlers. #BBL07

Huss: "Hobart's bowling at the death was sensational. The Heat didn't have any set batters at the right time." #BBL07

Heat will need a miracle to make playoff now… Next game against a team they've never beaten (6ers) and a likely elimination game against the Renegades to get 4th possibly? Left to rue that home game against the Hurricanes… #BBL07 #TurnUpTheHeat

It's basically season over for the Brisbane Heat, they can pretty much book their Mad Monday right now.
The German Club across the road from the Gabba would make for an excellent location. #PorkKnuckle #BBL07
