Ben McDermott made his bat talk against Melbourne Stars as Hobart Hurricanes recorded their second win in the Big Bash League (BBL) 2021-22. It was indeed a convincing win for the Matthew Wade-led side as the Stars were dominated in all three departments. Chasing 181 to win, Glenn Maxwell’s men did look in the hunt for the best part. However, fall of regular wickets meant the Hurricanes walked away with a 24-run win.

Speaking of how the game panned out, the Hurricanes won the toss and opted to bat at the Bellerive Oval in Hobart. The decision proved to be spot as openers Ben McDermott and Matthew Wade attacked Melbourne bowlers from the outset. The duo added 93 runs for the first wicket in no time before Wade fell prey to Nathan Coulter-Nile.

However, McDermott continued his onslaught from one end. He found potent partners in D’Arcy Short, Peter Handscomb, Harry Brook, and Tim David, who didn’t really play impact knocks but chipped in with significant contributions. As a result, the Hurricanes posted 180/6 in their allotted 20 overs. Notably, the Hobart-based team once looked set to cross the 200-run mark. However, the Stars minimized the damage with some impressive bowling in the latter half.

Glenn Maxwell’s men couldn’t come to the party

Chasing the challenging total, the Stars got off to a steady start with Marcus Stoinis and Joe Clarke adding 37 runs for the first wicket. While Stoinis was dismissed for 16, Clarke went onto slam a impressive fifty as the game looked hanging in balance at half-way mark. However, the middle-order couldn’t rise to the expectations.

The likes of Joe Burns, Glenn Maxwell (c), Andre Russell and Hilton Cartwright got starts but none were able to play an impact knock. Riley Meredith and Thomas Rogers made the ball talk for Hurricanes and took three wickets apiece. As a result, the Stars were restricted to 156/9, losing the contest by 24 runs. Needless to mention, Ben McDermott was declared the Player of the Match for his brilliant half-century.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitterati reacted to Hobart Hurricanes’ comprehensive win:
