The much awaited Big Bash League is finally here. It is perhaps the biggest and the most competitive cricketing league after the IPL. The season kicked off with a match between the Sydney Sixers and the Hobart Hurricanes. The former won the toss and opted to bowl first. With the new rules introduced in this year’s BBL, chasing was definitely going to be an advantage.
The Hurricanes got off to a disastrous start. They lost both their openers in the first seven balls as they were reeling at a score of 4-2. The loss of wickets meant that they could only reach 18 runs at the end of the first four overs. Colin Ingram and Peter Handscomb combined to form a 55-run partnership for the third wicket.
The former ended with a score of 55 of 42 balls while the latter scored 24 runs. However, the real show began once this partnership was broken. It was Tim David who rose to the opportunity. He played a magnificent inning to score 58 runs off just 33 balls. His knock included eight boundaries and one six. It helped his side reach a score of 178 at the end of their 20 overs. Ben Dwarshius and Daniel Christian were the pick of the bowlers with three wickets each.
James Vince’s efforts go in vain as the Sixers lose by 16 runs
Chasing a target of 179, the Sydney side lost Josh Philippe in the very first over. However, they did not panic and reached a score of 30-1 at the end of the first four overs. Jack Edwards and James Vince coupled to form a formidable partnership.
They were involved in a 116-run stand and it seemed like they had won it for their side. James Vince played a brilliant knock of 67 off just 41 balls consisting of eight boundaries and two sixes. But T20 format is known for surprises and here it was once again. They both were dismissed in quick succession and the Sixers were in trouble once again.
The rest of the batsmen failed to get going thanks to a brilliant bowling effort from the Hurricanes. James Faulkner and Riley Meredith were exceptional picking two wickets each and as a result, the Sixers fell short by 16 runs. The Hurricanes bowlers maxed out the opportunity they got and gave the Sydney batsman no breathing space. Riley Meredith and Nathan Ellis bowled tight lines and conceded barely any runs.
Wickets from time to time and consistent bowling did not allow the Sixers to get back in the game. They would be disappointed with this loss as they were in a winning position for a very long time. Tim David was given the man of the match award for his brilliant batting which took the Hurricanes to a match winning total.
Here’s how Twitter reacted:
Why are we making a game that is complicated more complicated. T20 was going well and it's popularity is huge. Why are you making changes in it. #BBL10 #The100

A winnings start for the Hobart Hurricanes #bbl10
They've beat the Sydney Sixers by 16 runs @HurricanesBBL— Prathmesh (@P1105K) December 10, 2020
I remember in the 2011 World Cup when England were cruising against India with Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell in control.
They took the batting powerplay – which was meant to help the batting team – and in the five overs they scored 25-4!!! #BBL10— I Stand With Zelina Vega (@bainalan05) December 10, 2020
Good to see James Faulkner bowl decent #BBL10

I like the new rules in place for this season. But I still don't like the bat flip. Cmon that's Street cricket stuff.#BBL10

Not sure how to evaluate the power surge today, but definitely played a huge role in today's result. Also, makes you wonder if it is better to take the PS when you have 2 set batsmen so that they could maximize or when you have new batsmen to help them get going #BBL10
