Chattogram Challengers locked horns Sylhet Thunder in the season opener of Bangladesh Premier League 2019-20. It turned out to be an enthralling encounter for the fans and both the sides gave some commendable performances in the match. But in the end, Challengers won the match by five wickets in a close encounter.

Challengers won the toss in the opening game and elected to bowl. The bowlers proved their skipper’s decision right by dismissing opener Rony Talukdar in the second over of the innings. Rubel Hossain bowled a brilliant outswinger that took a thick edge of the bat and went directly into the gloves of the wicketkeeper.

Mohammad Mithun’s unbeaten knock of 84 runs went to vain

Johnson Charles, on the other hand, looked in great touch, who mustered 35 runs off 23 balls with seven boundaries. The moment West Indian batsman started looking dangerous Nasum Ahmed, the left-arm spinner, castled him to break the momentum of the Thunder.

In the meantime, Mohammad Mithun got settled on the wicket and thrashed the bowlers all across the park. But he didn’t get support from the other end. At one point, the Thunder were hurling towards a score of 180 but the brilliance of Challengers’ bowlers restricted them to a nominal score of 162 runs in stipulated 20 overs.

Mithun played a swashbuckling knock of unbeaten 84* runs off 48 deliveries with four boundaries and five sixes and Mosaddek Hossain also contributed 29 runs but at the cost of 35 balls.

Coming onto the chase, the Challengers got off to a poor start and lost their opener, Junaid Siddique and middle-order batsman Nasir Hossain off consecutive balls off Nazmul Islam in the fourth over of the innings. He was bowling at his top-notch form and the batters were finding it difficult to play stroke against the spinner.

In the sixth over of the innings, they lost settled opener, Avishka Fernando, who was caught by Krishmar Santokie off Jeevan Mendis. He scored 33 runs off just 27 balls with four boundaries and three sixes before his inning came to a halt. In the latter part of the stage, Imrul Kayes (61) and Chadwick Walton (49) stitched a brilliant partnership of 86 runs and brought their side back into the match.

It turned out to be a match-winning stand for Challengers, who at one point were struggling at 64/4. Before Kayes could finish the match for his side, he was caught by Santokie off Ebadot Hossain. He scored 61 runs off 38 balls with two boundaries and five sixes and his brilliance with the bat turned out to be the main reason behind Challengers chasing down the target with six balls spare. Walton also contributed well with the bat and scored 49* runs in 30 deliveries with three fours and two sixes.
