Number 7, 8 and 9 scored half centuries for Team India and got them a lead of 134 runs on the third day of the third Test. The Indian middle order failed to get going and they were looking down at falling behind England’s first inning total and that is when the partnership between Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja kicked in. The off-spinner has not just been magnificent with the ball this year but has also scored runs consistently.
Ashwin was batting on an overnight score of 57 but was dismissed on 72 before he could do more damage. It didn’t change a lot of things other than the batsman as Jayant Yadav walked in and showed composure and application. Jadeja now the senior partner in the partnership took up the responsibility and scored most of the runs. Yadav on the other end was happy to rotate the strike and hold it up.
They also had a fruitful partnership and after Ashwin and Jadeja’s 97-run stand for the 7th wicket they this pair added 80 runs together. The spinners also ensured that they went into Lunch having lost just one wicket in the opening session where the ball was expected to move. Jadeja walked out in a super aggressive mindset in the following session but holed out off Adil Rashid trying to hit him over long-on.
Losing the senior partner didn’t quite bother Jayant as he stayed put to it and eventually the patience paid off as he managed to score his maiden Test fifty. The pacers also hit a few blows but the Indian innings was folded for 417 runs that also gave the Indian bowlers almost 40 overs to have a go at the English batsmen.
Skipper Virat Kohli started with his pacers but soon turned to the tweakers who were supposed to do the job. Alastair Cook survived a couple of close lbw appeals with the DRS decision going in his favor off Jadeja and Ashwin but he couldn’t make it count as Ashwin bowled a beauty and rattled his stumps. There were a lot of things happening for the spinners and the off-spinner looked the most lethal of the three.
Ashwin foxed Moeen Ali with a loopy delivery, Jayanta Yadav then got into the act as well and induced an edge of the man in form Jonny Bairstow’s bat. In the last over of the day Ravi Ashwin beat Ben Stokes for turn and they all went up, the umpire didn’t think it was out but had to overturn his decision after a referral. The day ended on a high for Team India as they now have sent 4 England batsmen back to the hut while they have a lead of 56 runs.
Here is how Twitter reacted during the course of the game:

What a day for India.
As good as it gets. And on a pitch which is so much better than the one against SA.#IndvEng— Mohammad Kaif (@MohammadKaif) November 28, 2016
Cook has been out bowled six times in his last 9 Tests; as many times as he was bowled in 74 Tests from July 2006 to June 2012. #INDvENG
