The day 2 of the India v South Africa 3rd Test was destined to shape the result of not only this match but the entire series. It started with Dean Elgar losing his stumps to Ravichandran Ashwin and South Africa were 3 down for 11. In his very next over Ashwin induced an edge off the skipper Hashim Amla and the trend followed when Ravindra Jadeja caught and bowled AB de Villiers in the over to follow; it got South Africa a unique record of losing half their side for 12 runs.

Dean Vilas and JP Duminy put up some runs but Jadeja bowled an unplayable ball to Vilas to break the partnership and now it looked like the Proteas would be bowled out well under 100. Ashwin ended the innings with a fifer as Jadeja got four and Mishra a wicket. The trio ensured India despite posting 215 had a 136 runs lead over South Africa as they were bowled out for 79.

India in their second innings were ordinary, may be complacent since they already had enough runs to bowl South Africa out again. Cheteshwar Pujara batted well for his 36 and so did Shikhar Dhawan who scored 31 but apart from them most Indian batsmen had little to contribute and Imran Tahir’s 5-wicket haul ensured they bowled the hosts out for 173.

The target of 310 isn’t an easy 4th innings target on any wicket especially not on this surface at Nagpur and South Africa have already lost a couple in the form of Stiaan van Zyl and night watchman Imran Tahir who once again came in to bat ahead of the skipper and got out soon. It also saw Amla and Elgar start and end the day for South Africa.
