The Indian eves scripted history after beating South Africa in the final T20I at Cape Town earlier today. With the 54 runs win, the Harmanpreet Kaur led side became the first Indian side to have won two series on a single tour in the rainbow nation. It comes as a huge milestone after winning the T20 series earlier in Australia.
Having already sealed the three-match ODI series 2-1, the Indian team was sitting in the driver’s seat 2-1 up in the five-match T20I series after rain washed out the fourth game in Centurion.
The Indian colts outclassed the hosts in the final encounter as they won the series 3-1 and culminated their tour on a high. Mithali Raj stood above the rest, showing her class in the shortest format while Harmanpreet Kaur did well as a captain. She was well supported by a superb bowling unit as well although without senior pacer Jhulan Goswami.
Goswami’s replacement Rumeli Dhar had a memorable outing in the couple of games she played and picked up three wickets in the tour finale. But the biggest takeaway for India have been the emergence of Mumbai’s 17-year old batter Jemimah Rodrigues, who has lived every bit of the hype and perhaps displayed her skills at the international stage.
It was an all-round performance as Mithali Raj and J. Rodrigues kept their feet on the pedal, hammering 96 off the last 10 overs. Raj got out after scoring her 13th T20I fifty while Rodrigues and later Harmanpreet Kaur, punished the South African bowlers with some clean hitting; India finishing with a combative 166.
In response, South Africa’s chase never got going as it folded for a paltry 112. Pandey, Dhar and Gayakwad took three wickets apiece for India. South Africa fought well in the ODI series as well as the shortest format but was completely outclassed by a formidable Indian side.
Following India’s incredible victory, Twitter exploded will celebration as wishes started pouring in from every corner of the nation.
