The second day of the first Test between Windies and India belonged to Ishant Sharma. He was terrific with the ball – full of perseverance and determination. But before that, Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja walked out into the middle to continue the first innings. India’s score was 203/6 at the close of play on Day 1 and losing the wicket-keeper quite early for just 24 runs didn’t really help.

However, Ravindra Jadeja batted beautifully with the tail. He got enough support from Ishant Sharma who hung in the middle for 62 balls and scored 19 runs. After his wicket fell, Ravindra Jadeja tried to accelerate. He was the last person to get out in the innings and mustered 58 runs. His efforts helped India get to 297 runs in the first innings which was quite impressive after being down to 25/3 at one stage.

Ishant Sharma forces the Windies batsmen to make mistakes

Courtesy some brilliant hitting from John Campbell, Windies got off to an aggressive start in their innings. The 25-year-old hit four boundaries in his brief stay in the middle and scored 23 runs. Kraigg Brathwaite and Shamarh Brooks also looked good initially but got out to some poor shots. Yet, at 82/3 before the final session of play, Windies was still in a decent position. With some sensible batting, they could have narrowed down the margin between both the teams.

However, they kept losing wickets at regular intervals after that and this was the time when Ishant Sharma unleashed his best. Roston Chase was the best batsman for them on the day and he scored 48 runs before he hit one straight to the fielder. Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer got off to good starts and played positive cricket. However, after scoring 24 and 35 runs respectively, they threw their wickets away putting the team under pressure.

At the close of play on Day 2, Windies were at 189/8 with Jason Holder still out there in the middle. They still trail by 108 runs and it is all up to the skipper for now. Twitterati congratulated Ishant Sharma for his five-wicket haul and also Jasprit Bumrah for getting to 50 Test wickets. The Windies fans weren’t impressed with their batsmen’s efforts.
