The stage was all set for the first day game at the MCA Stadium, Pune. The ‘hosts’, Chennai Super Kings, locked horns with the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the marquee clash. Coming into the game, both teams had contrasting fortunes. While the Super Kings had faced a defeat, the RCB side had won their previous encounter. However, when seen on the broader scale, the Chennai Super Kings stood at a far superior position in the points table than the Royal Challengers Bangalore.

The two teams share a great rivalry in the tournament history and hence, the build up to the game was immense. The fans believed they were in for a cracking contest. But as the things at the half way stage, it seems to be a one way road in the favor of the Chennai Super Kings. In the match, the hosts won the toss and opted to field first. Dhruv Shorey and David Willey got their first games of the season. Meanwhile, for the RCB camp, Parthiv Patel got his first look in the new outfit.

In walked Parthiv Patel and Brendon McCullum to open the innings for the Royal Challengers Bangalore. McCullum’s stay at the crease was cut short by Lungi Ngidi in the second over of the game. Virat Kohli arrived at the crease but only to score 8 in the match. He was surprised by a faster one from Ravindra Jadeja that had his stumps in tatters.

AB de Villiers, who made his comeback in the game, perished cheaply as well after being stumped by MS Dhoni off the bowling of Harbhajan Singh on 1. With the big three back in the hut, the onus was on the other players to keep the innings going. Mandeep Singh (7) and Colin de Grandhomme (8) did no good to the innings total. While the wickets kept falling from one end, Parthiv showed great character to hold one end.

He departed after scoring 53 off 41 deliveries with five fours and a couple of sixes to his name. The innings never took off and RCB slumped to 89/8. Some late hitting from Tim Southee (36* off 26 balls) propelled the RCB total to 129/7 in the stipulated 20 overs. Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the bowlers for CSK with 3/18 to his name.

Here is how the fans reacted to the Royal Challengers Bangalore innings:
