The Quetta Gladiators have brought their Pakistan Super League (PSL 2022) campaign back on track with a seven-wicket win over the Lahore Qalandars on Monday, February 7. Despite having posted a total well in excess of 200, the Lahore bowlers failed to make much impact with the ball as Quetta batters took them to the cleaners and won a high-scoring thriller. Thus, the Gladiators who were placed at the fifth position in the PSL 2022 points table ended up registering their second win of the season.

Earlier after being put in to bat first at the National Stadium in Karachi, the Qalandars got off to a flying start with openers Fakhar Zaman and Abdullah Shafique going after the bowlers right from the word ‘go’ as the duo added 61 runs for the first wicket stand before the latter was run out for 32 off 27 balls just when it appeared that both of them would take their team to a mammoth total by showcasing a fantastic batting display.

Meanwhile, Zaman was again consistent on the 22 yards scoring a quickfire 70 off just 45 deliveries and was also the top-scorer for Lahore. At the same time, he also anchored the innings when he ran out of partners at the other end.

After the Pakistan batter was dismissed in the 17th over, the Quetta Gladiators would have heaved a sigh of relief but impactful knocks from the middle-order duo of Harry Brook and David Wiese powered them to a huge total of 204/5 from their 20 overs. Brook remained unbeaten scoring 41 off 15 deliveries whereas Wiese scored 22 runs off nine balls. Ghulam Mudasar was the pick of the bowlers for the Quetta Gladiators with figures of 2/43 from his four overs at an economy rate of 10.8 while Luke Wood and Iftikhar Ahmed finished with 1/45 and 1/10 respectively.

Chasing 205, explosive English opener Jason Roy meant business as he made his bat do the talking right away as the Lahore bowlers had no answers and found it difficult to rediscover their rhythm. Roy kept on clearing the boundaries at regular intervals and brought his century in no time. Just when it appeared that the South Africa-born cricketer would finish things off single-handedly, he was sent to the dug after being caught by Haris Rauf off David Wiese. He scored a blistering 117 off only 57 deliveries and his knock included 11 boundaries and four maximums at a strike rate of 203.5.

After Jason Roy’s departure, it seemed as if the Gladiators would lose their way but, his England teammate James Vince along with the middle-order batter Mohammad Nawaz ensured that there were no further hiccups as they guided the team past the finish line in the final over with three balls to spare. While Vince remained unbeaten on 49 runs off 38 deliveries, Nawaz was not out on 25 off 12 balls.
