You would have read about Parthiv Patel’s knock and Krunal Pandya’s cameo or about James Faulkner’s bowling and mind blowing fielding from Ravindra Jadeja but a 24-year-old Indian bowler eclipsed it all with his bowling. Jasprit Bumrah bowling the super over against Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch had them struggling to get bat on ball.
The first ball he bowled was a dot, but a no ball, a free hit in the super over is the best thing a batsman can ask for. Finch who had earlier got out for a duck positioned himself for a ramp shot but managed to just take a single. McCullum on strike and Bumrah bowled a wide. In the first three balls there were two extras and it didn’t look really bright for the Mumbai Indians but Bumrah was just too good.
He bowled the slower balls, the Yorkers and the full tosses but at best the batsmen managed singles, he allowed them just 6 runs while he had double the runs in the bank.
Earlier in the game Gujarat Lions skipper Suresh Raina won the toss in their last home game and decided to bat first. They were off to a flying start with young Ishan Kishan taking the opening responsibilities taking on Mitchell McClenaghan as well as Lasith Malinga. At the other end though McCullum, Raina, Finch and Dinesh Karthik were all out for single digit scores.
Cameos from Jadeja, James Faulkner and Andrew Tye took them to 153/9 in 20 overs. It was clearly an under par total against the Mumba Indians who have been rampant in the tournament thus far. Parthiv gave them just the perfect start the team would ask for in a mediocre chase like this but Jos Buttler’s early dismissal, Nitish Rana, Rohit Sharma and Kieron Pollard walking back after starts put them under pressure.
Birthday boy Faulkner brought them back in the contest with a couple of quick and big wickets that is when young Basil Thampi jumped in to contribute as well. He picked up three wickets in his four overs and the Mumbai chase was wobbling. It was the comeback man Irfan Pathan bowling the final over against Pandya who hit him for a six on the first ball.
The left-arm swing bowler made a comeback and didn’t let him get another big shot while Jadeja effected two run outs and Mumbai couldn’t score 6 runs from the last 5 balls.
Pollard and Buttler were sent out to take care of the super over and the big man from the Caribbean hit a four and a six before being out caught. Buttler facing the next ball also sixed one and Kishan took a really good catch to end MI’s super over inning on 11 with a ball to spare.
That was more than enough with Rohit choosing the student Bumrah over the senior Lasith Malinga and the magnificence that he delivered. Mumbai now have 16 points and have reserved a place in the top 4.

Bumrah bowling the Super Over ahead of Malinga. That's #IPL coming of age…baton has been passed on officially. Performance over reputation

6 runs by Bumrah are the least a bowler has conceded in #SuperOver in #IPL.Mitchell Johnson had also given six runs for KXIP vs RR in 2015.
