Jemimah Rodrigues wasn’t having the greatest of times in her career over the last 12 months. So much so that she was even dropped from the Indian national team. However, the youngster made a stupendous comeback in the Northern Superchargers’ win over Welsh Fire in the Women’s Hundred. On Saturday, her unbeaten 43-ball 92 hogged the limelight at the Headingley in Leeds.

Superchargers make a comeback after a rusty start

After being put in to bat first, the Fire got off to a flying start, scoring 36 runs in the powerplay. Bryony Smith and Hayley Matthews scored 19 and 30 to set the tone for the innings. Georgia Redmayne, Sarah Taylor and Sophie Luff scored in the double digits, but none of them was able to convert.

Alice Macleod couldn’t go beyond single digits after Katie Levick dismissed her. Levick got two wickets and gave runs at 0.80 per ball. For the Superchargers, Linsey Smith was stupendous.

She picked up the wickets of Taylor, Luff and Alex Griffiths and was the most economical bowler for her team. Alice-Davidson Richardson was a touch expensive, but she got the wickets of Matthews and Piepa Cleary. The Fire, in the end, crawled to 130 in their 20 overs.

Rodrigues rips the heart out of the Fire

The Superchargers got off to a disastrous start as Lauren Winfield, Laura Wolvaardt and Holly Armitage perished with 11 runs on the board. The 19-year-old Bess Heath started with three fours but holed out in the deep off Matthews.

From thereon, Rodrigues made sure that the Superchargers didn’t face a single more hiccup in their run-chase. The youngster blended caution with aggression. Rodrigues got to her fifty off a mere 29 balls after the Superchargers found themselves at 19/4. After she notched the half-century, she stepped on the gas.

She stayed until the very end and her knock was laced with 17 fours and one six. Richards lent her support with a matured 28-ball 23 as the duo shared an unbeaten stand of 112 runs for the fifth wicket. The Superchargers romped home with as many as 12 balls to spare.
