The trend of low-scoring and one-sided matches continued in the fourth match of the Big Bash League (BBL) as well. The Perth Scorchers lost their second consecutive game as the Sydney Sixers got their campaign underway with a brilliant victory thanks to a sensational partnership between Jordan Silk and Daniel Hughes. The duo came together when the team was in tatters and smashed half-centuries to help them post a more than competitive total on the board.

The Sixers opted to bat first after winning the toss and got off to a terrible start. Jack Edwards was dropped off the very first ball of the innings but he couldn’t make the most of the chance. Jason Behrendorff got better of him and soon the other opener Joe Denly was also snaffled by Jhye Richardson. Moises Henriques also failed to score and the hosts were left reeling at 30/3.

This is where Jordan Silk and Daniel Hughes got together and rebuilt the innings. They took calculated risks which paid off in the long run and the duo added 124 runs for the fourth wicket as the partnership was only broken in the last over. Eventually, the Sixers posted 164 runs for the loss of four wickets in 20 overs with Hughes scoring 62 runs and Silk remaining unbeaten on 67 off 49 balls.

Abbott and O’Keefe kill the chase

The Scorchers also started poorly with Steve O’Keefe picking three wickets in the first couple of overs itself. They were reduced to 9/3 and then Hilton Cartwright joined hands with Ashton Turner to resurrect the chase. The duo stitched the 99-run stand for the fourth but they were always behind the eight ball. The Sixers knew the conditions very well and they didn’t let the batsmen off the hook at any stage.

Just when the things were getting close both the set batsmen were sent back in quick succession which eventually ended the contest in the game with more than two overs to go. Perth succumbed to their second defeat in as many matches as they fell 17 runs short of the target reaching only 147 runs for the loss of eight wickets in 20 overs. While Sean Abbott ended up with figures of 3/29, O’Keefe returned with 3/19 which was the clincher in the end.
