One Karnataka batsman, KL Rahul missed a double century yesterday just by a run and today another player from the team, Karun Nair more than made up for his domestic teammate converting his maiden Test century into a double ton. Karun started the day with Murali Vijay at the other end on 71. He had a few anxious moments in the nineties where the experience of Vijay helped him stay calm and he hit one through the packed off-side field and Nair had his helmet off for the first time.
India lost one wicket in the first session and went into Lunch with the centurion unbeaten on 122. They were just 14 runs behind England’s first innings total and walked out to bat with a lot of intent. Nair went behind the spinners in the second session and punished them every time the ball was in his zone. He also played some exciting shots against the pacers, also playing an upper cut.
With Ashwin giving him good support from one end Nair carried on the attacking plan. When the spinners placed fielders on the leg-side and challenged him, he played the sweep shot perfectly in the gap to beat them and get boundaries. The characteristic of his knock was the strokes he played, he looked very comfortable driving, pulling and playing the reverse sweep as well.
He also had luck on his side with the inside edge missing the stump and going off to the boundary on 189. Apart from the one catch that Alastair Cook dropped when Nair was on 35, it was a flawless knock and as he spent time in the middle read the situation better deciding who to attack and which bowler to stay cautious against.
In the 167th over England had a full strength off-side but he managed to churn the ball through them to the boundary and got to his maiden Test double century. With that, he became only the third Indian player to convert maiden ton into a double. He hit 23 boundaries and a six on his way to the milestone.
Here is how Twitter reacted to Karun Nair’s feat:

Karun Nair wouldn't even be playing this Test, a freak injury to Rahane helps Karun retain his spot and he gets a double ton. #destiny

KL Rahul should take a leaf out of Karun's book on how to score a double hundred. Or at least take a run from kaRUN
