Kolkata Knight Riders took on the Kings XI Punjab in a thrilling encounter at the Eden Gardens. Captain Murali Vijay won the toss as Punjab elected to field first. While KKR brought in Shakib Al Hasan and Brad Hogg, KXIP had Manan Vohra coming in for Shaun Marsh.
Kolkata began in a splendid fashion as the openers put on a 101-run partnership for the first wicket. While Gautam Gambhir continued his great form with another elegant half century, Robin Uthappa also scored a brilliant 70 runs from just 49 balls. They laid the foundation for KKR as they looked good enough for 180.
In the end, KKR could only settle for 164/3, thanks to some wonderful death bowling by Sandeep and Mohit Sharma. No bowler picked wickets as all of them were a result of run out.
Chasing 165, Kings XI Punjab began poorly as they were reduced to 13/3 with Vohra and Marcus Stoinis out on duck. Finally, Glenn Maxwell stepped up for KXIP as he recovered them from an early slump. He raced his way to 68 runs from 42 balls before getting out trying to play a reverse sweep.
KKR bowlers did well in the end though Axar Patel gave them a brief scare. Andre Russell was the pick of the bowlers as he got 4 wickets and also effected a brilliant run out. He was deservingly adjudged the man of the match.
Twitter kept everyone entertained with some splendid tweets throughout the game. Right from lauding Gambhir-Uthappa to trolling Punjab bowlers, from lauding Russell to trolling Punjab openers. Here are some of the Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game:
Ganguly standing next to SRK doesn't cheer #KKR
Big B should promptly tweet this & SRK should reply with "nothing more to add"#KKRvKXIP— TheGoanPatiala (@TheGoanPatiala) May 4, 2016
Barring his penultimate over of length Andre Russell's bowling has really improved in the last year and a half. Super cricketer. #yorkers.

Someday he wins the game with the bat, then turns up and wins one with the ball. What a player. @Russell12A

Maxwell will know why finishing the game matters more than his fancy shots. Wasn't getting the reverse sweeps to fence, still went for it.

Maxwell should be allowed a cigar and a mojito when he's out there, gets so bored with just a bat in his hand.#KKRvKXIP

Look what's happened with #KKR! From being a spin heavy team, they are opening with genuine quicks and taking wickets.

Q- What's the similarity between Marcus Stoinis & Ishant Sharma?
A- They have more focused on their hair than their bowling.#KKRvKXIP— Sunil- The Cricketer (@1sInto2s) May 4, 2016
Punjab bowling seems toothless tonite. Batsmen should be prepared to chase 180+

5th 50+ stand for Gambhir-Uthappa in this IPL. No other pair has had more than 2 such stands.

Marcus Stoinis should try in Hollywood movies, he has great future there with this kind of face.#KKRvKXIP
