London Spirit’s winless streak in the Men’s Hundred extended to four after Southern Brave defeated them by four runs on Sunday, August 1 at the Lord’s Cricket Ground. The Eoin Morgan-led team suffered a horrendous batting collapse and kept languishing at the bottom of the points table.

Davies shines for the Brave

After winning the toss, and opting to field first, the Spirit restricted the Brave to 145. Alex Davies scored a half-century, but he didn’t get much support from the others. Opener Quinton de Kock and Devon Conway scored in the 20s, but both were unable to convert.

In the end, a couple of boundaries from Ross Whiteley took the Brave over the 140-run mark. For the Spirit, Blake Cullen was the most successful with the wickets of De Kock and Davies. Barring Afghanistan’s Mohammad Nabi, the other Spirit’s bowlers got at least a wicket.

Spirit collapse after a good start

The Spirit started their run-chase on a resounding note, scoring 68 runs off 27 balls. Adam Rossington’s 21-45 and Josh Inglis’ 43-ball 55 set the tone for the run-chase in a massive manner. In their last 73 balls, they needed 78 runs at a tad over a run-a-ball.

However, after they got out, the Spirit capitulated and were restricted to 141. George Garton and Chris Jordan picked up two wickets each to put London on the backfoot. None of the Spirit’s batters after the openers could get into the double digits, including Eoin Morgan.

I just try and contribute in whichever way possible: Chris Jordan

Jordan, who became the Player of the Match, was happy to finish the game off for his team. He also conjured praises from Vince, the Brave’s skipper.

“The start they got off to, we were under pressure but the guys came back and picked wickets in succession. They have a reasonably long tail and if we got the bowlers in, we had a chance to win the game, but yeah… Tymal and CJ were outstanding at the end,” Vince was quoted as saying.

“Really was (a roller coaster). But that’s what makes the format so much fun. We didn’t get off to the best of starts with the bat but fought back with the ball. I just try and contribute in whichever way possible. Happy that I was able to execute at the end and get us two points,” Jordan said.
