New Zealand, tick. Pakistan, tick. South Africa, tick. India, tick. Sri Lanka, tick. Now Australia, tick. August 6, 2021, will be marked as one of the more memorable days in the history of Bangladesh cricket as the national team achieved their first-ever series win, in any format, against Australia. The team led by Mahmudullah managed to beat the Australian team in the third successive T20I match to clinch the five-match series.

Bangladesh yet again proved that they are a force to reckon with in home conditions. Their white-ball game has been top-notch ever since 2015. They have previously beaten South Africa (2015), New Zealand (2010), India (2015), Pakistan (2015), and Sri Lanka (2021) in the ODI series at home. But this was their first major T20I series win in their own backyard.

Mahmudullah plays a captain’s knock

Coming into the third T20I in Dhaka on Friday, Bangladesh were confident as they had won two low-scoring matches at the same venue earlier this week. The Bangladesh team won the first game by a margin of 23 runs while defending 131 and they won the second match chasing a total of 121. The third T20I ended up being another low-scoring affair.

Bangladesh had a tough time batting in the middle but their skipper Mahmudallah’s knock of 52 runs from 53 balls ended up being the match-defining one. Shakib Al Hasan got a quick 26 runs from 17 balls while Afif Hossain’s 13-ball 19 helped Bangladesh finish on 127 for nine in their allotted 20 overs. Nathan Ellis, on debut for Australia, snapped up a hat-trick and ended up being the pick of the bowlers with figures of three for 34. Adam Zampa and Jos Hazlewood also got two wickets each.

Mustafizur gives nothing away

Chasing the sub-par total, the visitors lost their skipper, Matthew Wade, early in the innings for one. Ben McDermott and Mitchell Marsh got together for a 63-run stand. But, with time Aussies found it more and more difficult to score quickly. McDermott ended with a 41-ball 35 while Marsh made 51 runs from 47 balls. The Australians didn’t manage to finish the match due to some excellent bowling by the Bangladesh bowlers.

Eventually, Australia fell short of the target by 10 runs. Mustafizur Rahman bowled a spell of four overs where he conceded just nine runs, without getting a wicket. Shoriful Islam picked up two wickets while Nasum Ahmed and Shakib got a scalp each. The two teams will now play the dead rubbers on August 7 and August 9 to conclude the five-match series.
