New Zealand has been ruthless in the series against Pakistan so far. They haven’t given the team from subcontinent any chance at all. The five-match ODI series has seen New Zealand win four of them already. An unassailable lead saw Pakistan lose their confidence in the fourth ODI as another dead rubber was to be played today.
The teams were lined up differently to that of the first three meaningful matches. Pakistan, however, had to replace Shoaib Malik forcibly. The veteran batter had a concussion from the last ODI as he was hit on his head from a Colin Munro throw. New Zealand rested their premier bowler, Trent Boult, for this one as well.
The toss went New Zealand’s way and they decided to bat first on a flat pitch. A solid start and a fantastic century from Martin Guptill saw Pakistan struggling again. A fifty-run opening partnership and then a solid 59 from Ross Taylor with a rather slow century by Guptill took New Zealand towards a target of 271. The Kiwis could have done better given the start they had.
Munro had got them off to a flyer. Guptill was holding back as they had reached 63 in just 9 overs. However, some good tight bowling from Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz saw New Zealand fall off the rail. This restriction of runs gave Pakistan some hope of avoiding a whitewash.
Pakistan’s chase began like the worst nightmare. The openers were sent packing within the first six overs and the middle order was in before they could even blink. The Kiwis were on the front foot and they pressed even harder to reduce the Pakistanis to 57 for 5. With half of the team down, Pakistan crawled their way back in the game with a solid 100 run partnership.
The pair of Haris Sohail and Shadab Khan pulled Pakistan out of dead trouble. However, Sohail fell to a Mitchell Santner’s floater as Pakistan were slammed against the wall again. Khan and Sohail scored shame saving half-centuries as cameos from the tail-enders took Pakistan closer to the target. They even thought of winning the game after a late outburst from Aamer Yamin and Mohammad Nawaz.
Twitter was going berserk when the two of them started hitting the Kiwi bowlers for fun. Nawaz was sent back by a scorcher from Lockie Ferguson. However, Yamin continued with his shots, one edge down the third man other past the fine leg, runs were coming thick and fast for the batter. Hopes of winning a game in New Zealand were still alive.
However, he was batting with a certain Runman Raees. Matt Henry was the one who got the first three-wicket, he also got the last one and ended with the figures of 4 for 53. New Zealand won the game by 15 runs as they outclassed, outshined and outplayed the Pakistani team to win the series formidably with a margin of 5 wins to none.
This win saw Twitter erupt as Pakistan were whitewashed in New Zealand. There were some people making fun of the subcontinent team while some were analyzing the loss. Let us have a look at the reaction.
