Explosive opener Martin Guptill produced a fantastic display of clean hitting as New Zealand powered to a 10-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the second one-day international in Christchurch. Guptill smashed 93 off just 30 deliveries, hitting nine fours and eight sixes at Hagley Park on Monday.

After Sri Lanka were dismissed for a paltry 117, Guptill and Tom Latham knocked off the required runs in just 8.2 overs. The end conclusion gave New Zealand a vital 2-0 lead in the five-match series, with game three in Nelson on New Year’s Eve.

Guptill, who has scored more ODI runs than any batsman in 2015, took his year’s tally to 1459. He almost fell first ball, turning a lifting delivery from Dushmantha Chameera to leg gully, but Milinda Siriwardana couldn’t grab on to the catch.

He got a boundary for the shot and then hit three more in a row in Nuwan Kulasekara’s first over, including a six over long-on. His assault continued in the next over, lofting three successive balls from Chameera over the rope and following up with two fours to race to 46 off 12 deliveries.

It took him to within sight of South African AB de Villiers’ record of fastest ODI half-century of 16 balls. But Sri Lanka tightened up their bowling to Guptill, whose 50 came up with a single to mid-wicket from the 17th ball he faced to beat by one ball skipper Brendon McCullum’s New Zealand record.

Let’s check out how the world of Twitter reacted to New Zealand’s massive win against a hapless Sri Lanka.
