After raising the standards in their match against India, England fell flat against the South African bowling line-up. Jonty Rhodes won the toss and decided that his team would field first. It was a bold decision considering what England had done in their previous game.
Kevin Pietersen and Phil Mustard walked out to open the batting. Mustard was dismissed for a second-ball duck as Garnett Kruger got a wicket on the very first ball of his spell. Captain Pietersen played some attacking shots but failed to capitalize on his start. He ended with a score of 21 runs in 12 balls which included five boundaries. Another wicket fell in the very same over and England were reeling at 41-4 at the end of 6.4 overs.
Darren Maddy tried his best to consolidate the inning for his team but did not get any support from the other batsmen. He scored 25 runs in 23 balls and ended as the highest run-scorer of the inning. Chris Tremlett played a good cameo to give the England bowlers something to bowl at. His knock of 23 runs included one boundary and two maximums.
Thandi Tshabalala puts South Africa in the driver’s seat
The English side was eventually bowled out for 121 runs in 18.2 overs. Tshabalala was the key contributor with the ball as he took three wickets conceding only 26 runs in his four overs. Makhaya Ntini and Zander de Bruyn too were good with the ball as they got a couple of wickets each.
Chasing 122 was never going to be a tough task for the South African batsman. The openers gave them a good start and were involved in a 59 run partnership. Morne van Wyk took on the aggressor’s role as he finished with a score of 46 runs off just 31 balls. His knock included six boundaries and two sixes. Andrew Puttick played a supporting role scoring 23 runs at around a run a ball.
Alviro Petersen and Jonty Rhodes played aggressive cameos to hand their side an easy win by eight wickets. They finished off the game in only 13 overs which gave a massive boost to their net run rate. This was England’s first loss of the tournament as they had won both their previous games. They have the same points as South Africa but due to a big loss today their net run rate has taken a beating. It would be interesting to see how they come back from this loss in their future games.
