India’s limited-overs skipper MS Dhoni achieved another milestone during the course of the third ODI match against New Zealand at the IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali as he completed 9000 runs in ODI cricket.
Dhoni came out to bat at No.4 after the loss of two early wickets and laid the foundation for the chase with Virat Kohli. Coming into the match Dhoni needed 22 more runs to achieve the feat. He hit Mitchell Santner for a six to bring up 9,000 runs in the format.
The 35-year-old achieveD the feat in his 281st ODI match. He is only the 5th Indian to the milestone after Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid and Mohammad Azharuddin. Overall, he is the 17th player in ODI cricket to score 9000 runs, and the only one with an average over 50.
Before this match, Dhoni has featured in 280 ODIs, had accumulated 8978 runs with 9 hundreds and 60 half centuries.

India won the toss for the 3rd consecutive time in the ODI series and put the opposition on to bat first. New Zealand managed to post the biggest target of the series of 286, and they started off well with ball dismissing both the openers inside 10 overs.
However, the Kohli-Dhoni duo never allowed the bowlers to settle down and took the match away from the Kiwis. Kohli was dropped way early in the innings by Ross Taylor and as they say, ‘catches win matches’, Kohli made New Zealand pay for the drop. Meanwhile, Dhoni also brought up his 61st fifty in the match.

MS Dhoni, first player to score 9000 ODI runs with an average of over 50. Talk about being best in the business, despite not batting in top.
