Despite the fact that the match was supposed to be a warm-up game but the fact that former Indian skipper MS Dhoni was leading the India A team and that would be his last game as the skipper of the Men in Blue made the match all him. A 20,000 odd crowd turned up at the CCI in Mumbai to watch their hero lead the team and he didn’t disappoint them. Dhoni played a quickfire knock of 68 from 40 balls to take the team over 300 in their 50 overs.

Earlier it was England skipper Eoin Morgan who won the toss and decided to bowl first. There was some grass on the surface and that coupled with the breeze from the sea gave the English bowlers something to bowl with. The ball swung initially and the Indian opening pair of Mandeep Singh and Shikhar Dhawan started cautiously. Both looked tentative initially and a David Willey delivery swung back in and found the gap between the bat and pads and Mandeep’s timber was shattered.

Dhawan took his time and eventually settled to play his shots he had an 121-run partnership with Ambati Rayudu on his way to his half century. He got out on 63 and amidst the chants for Dhoni.. Dhoni in walked Yuvraj Singh. The southpaw was tested with the short ball by the English bowlers early on but he survived and then played some beautiful strokes and some vintage Yuvraj Singh shots. The ball was finding its way to the fence more often as Rayudu got to his century.

He walked back after touching the triple figures and the man the crowd was there for walked out to the middle. There was a lot of anticipation and excitement around Dhoni playing the game and all that paid off once he started to get going. He played freely – the aggressive intent, the pulls, the big shots were all there while he ran between the wickets like a 20-year-old. Once he was unbeaten for the last couple of over all present at the CCI knew they were in for a treat.

Dhoni took the strike in the last over against Chris Woakes and it started with a six, two fours followed, then a couple, another six and he finished it with a single – unbeaten on 68. The cheers were fulfilled as the skipper ended took his team to 304/4 in 50 overs.
