Quetta Gladiators’ hopes of making it to the playoffs ended with their crushing loss against Multan Sultans in match 25 of the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL). Having lost four out of five matches in the first leg, the Gladiators were hoping for the change of fortunes in Abu Dhabi but they could only register a solitary win and a whopping loss on Wednesday has effectively ended their campaign.

It was yet another dismal performance from their batsmen after the skipper Sarfaraz Ahmed opted to chase. Set a target of 184, the Gladiators never looked like chasing down the total apart from the opening pair which added 27 runs in around three overs. Imran Khan nipped out Jake Weatherald in the fourth over and then started the one-way traffic which stopped only after Quetta was bowled out.

Wickets kept falling continuously and none of the Multan’s bowlers gave an inch to the opposition defending a big total. To make things worse, Usman Khan also got run-out and then Imran Tahir came into the attack to rip apart the lower order in just a couple of overs of his spell. Blessing Muzarabani and Sohail Tanvir also chipped in.

Only four of the Quetta Gladiators’ batsmen could reach the double figures as they were skittled only for 73 runs in 13 overs. Whole team got bundled out within nine overs after the first wicket fell.

Shan Masood and Charles propel Multan

Earlier, after being put in to bat first, Multan Sultans’ in-form batsman Mohammad Rizwan and his partner Shan Masood gave a brilliant start to the team. The latter had found his range by then as the duo added 72 runs for the opening wicket. Rizwan couldn’t get off the blocks and was dismissed on 21 off 23. Sohaib Maqsood also got out early to leave the team at 88/2.

This is when Charles stepped up to add 37 runs in less than four overs with Masood. The opener got out after scoring a valiant 73 off just 42 balls with seven fours and four sixes to his name. From here on, Charles took control of the innings to slam 47 off just 24 balls taking apart the Gladiators in the death overs. The Sultans eventually posted a big total of 183/5 in their 20 overs.

And the Gladiators succumbed under pressure in the chase which have ended their playoff hopes now and they will play their last league game to spoil the party for other teams. The Sultans, on the other hand, have strengthened their fourth place and are now two points clear of the fifth placed Karachi Kings.
