Multan Sultans have managed to qualify for their maiden final of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in the 2021 edition of the tournament. On Monday, June 21, the team, captained by Mohammad Rizwan, beat the high-flying Islamabad United by 31 runs in the Qualifier. As far as the United are concerned, they would get another bite at the cherry against the Peshawar Zalmi on Tuesday.

Sultans pile up a massive score

Having lost both their games against the United in the first round, the Sultans opted to bat first. But they got off to a poor start as Rizwan gloved one off Akif Javed and perished for a duck. Sohaib Maqsood kept the scoreboard ticking with some audacious strokes through the on and off-side.

Shan Masood hit Shadab Khan for two fours in the eighth over before getting out in the same over. Rilee Rossouw couldn’t open his account after Shadab and the United used the DRS to good effect. But Maqsood and Johnson Charles’ 63-run stand steadied the ship for the Sultans.

Faheem Ashraf broke the stand, getting rid of Charles for a 21-ball 41. Maqsood went on to score 59 off 41. In the end, Khushdil Shah hit five sixes, scored a 22-ball 42, and took the Sultans to a formidable 180.

Tanvir steps up

Prior to the Qualifier, Sohail Tanvir had picked one wicket in six PSL 2021 games. However, in the previous game, he brought forth his A-game and went away with the Player of the Match award. In the first three overs, he prized out the wickets of Colin Munro, who bagged a golden duck, and Shadab.

Later, the left-arm pacer came back to dismiss Usman Khawaja. He had an economy rate of 4.25. For the United, Khawaja showed some fight as he got to his half-century off 33 balls. But once, Tanvir dismissed him for a 40-ball 70, the United kept sliding down the barrel.

Hussain Talat scored a run-a-ball 25, but it wasn’t enough for Islamabad to go over the line. Along with Tanvir, Blessing Muzarabani also picked three wickets. Imran Tahir got a couple of scalps as well.
