In what was a low-scoring thriller at the Hyderabad stadium, Mumbai Indians went on to grab their third IPL title. In a match that had everything a final should’ve, this game proved the notion of how tricky the low scores in this format can be. Earlier in the day, it was captain Rohit Sharma who won the toss as Mumbai Indians elected to bat first. Both teams had an unchanged XI from their previous games as the teams looked set to play the grand finale.
The Mumbai Indians openers failed to capitalise on the big day. Both the openers were back to the dugout in the third over. Rohit Sharma and Ambati Rayudu tried to make a difference but failed to do so. Steve Smith effected a wonderful run out to get Rayudu out. This triggered a collapse as MI slumped from 41/2 to 79/7.
It seemed as if everything that could’ve gone wrong with Mumbai had gone wrong in the finals. However, Krunal Pandya’s wonderful 47 (38) with the bat helped them score 129/8 as they got something to defend. The trio of Adam Zampa, Daniel Christian and Jaydev Unadkat took a couple of wickets each.
Rising Pune Supergiant lost Rahul Tripathi early. However, Ajinkya Rahane and Captain Steve Smith’s stellar partnership took the game away from the Mumbai Indians. It seemed like a cakewalk for them. What followed was something unimaginable.
Steve Smith and MS Dhoni went into defensive mode as the Mumbai bowlers cashed in. Once MS Dhoni was out, Mumbai Indians thought they had a real chance of winning it. However, some brilliant bowling by Jasprit Bumrah and Lasith Malonga brought the game to the last over.
Mitchell Johnson bowled the over of the game as he had Steve Smith dismissed and managed to defend 11 runs in the over. The Rising Pune Supergiant fell short of one run as the Mumbai Indians won the tenth season of the IPL.
Here are some of the amazing Twitter reactions that took place during the course of the game:

Cricket is a weird game. You score 50 runs in final but your best shot in that inning gets you out. That shot was amazing! #Smith #MIvRPS

Fleming is a better choker than Mahela..

Love him or hate him, but you just can't ignore the fact that Rohit Sharma is a great IPL captain, if not a great batsman.

Cricketing logic must prevail over a long league…the best team (most balanced) eventually won the trophy ? well done, #MI #IPL

BCCI: Yes madam, Done. #MIvRPS #IPL— Raunak Kapoor (@RaunakRK) May 21, 2017
To win finals you need to not play with fear. I feel @mipaltan have batted with fear tonight. They have been extremely tentative from ball 1
