Hosts Bangladesh made a resounding comeback during the second Test match against Sri Lanka, being played at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, Dhaka. Bangladesh were reeling against some quality bowling from the visitors on Day 1, however, the duo of Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim came to the rescue of the home side.

After Bangladesh won the toss and opted to bat, their decision backfired as the opening duo of Mahmudul Hasan Joy and Tamim Iqbal went back to the pavilion without disturbing the scorers. While Joy was cleaned up by pacer Kasun Rajitha, Tamim was scalped by Asitha Fernando.

After the fall of the openers, the duo of Najmul Shanto and skipper Mominul Haque tried to steady the ship, but the Sri Lankan new-ball bowlers had an excellent time in the middle as they sent them back early. Shanto was bowled by Rajitha on his score of eight and Mominul (nine runs) was scalped by Fernando.

The experienced duo of Mushfiqur Rahim and Shakib Al Hasan joined each other in the middle, but Shakib was struck right in front of the wicket by Rajitha on his very first ball. Liton Das then joined Rahim and they ensured that the home side did not suffer any more setbacks.

The duo went on with their business as they ensured that Bangladesh cross the 100 and then the 200-run marks as they built an unbeaten 253-run stand for the sixth wicket as none of the Sri Lanka bowlers could create any sort of trouble for them. The two stood unbeaten at the end of Day 1, with Mushfiqur scoring 115 off 252 while Das 135 off 221.

Apart from Rajitha and Fernando, Sri Lanka skipper Dimuth Karunaratne tried as many as four other bowlers including Praveen Jayawickrama, Ramesh Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva, and himself, but none of them got any success with the ball. With the match slightly tilted in Bangladesh’s favour, it remains to be seen how the visitors will reply on Day 2.
